The study revealed that in 2009, social media sites became more popular than e-mail for the first time ever. 

Charles Buchwalter, vice president of Nielsen Online said;

the study’s findings reflect online users’ desire for a more “personalised relationship” with online sites and networks and concluded that advertisers would have to “create more meaningful relationships with customers”, to best take advantage of the medium.
